At ORY®, we believe you should know what’s in your products and why. This page lists the published research behind what we say about glyceryl stearate SE. Each section starts with our claim, then tells you how well the research supports it, then lists the sources so you can read them yourself.
How to read this page Supported — backed by peer-reviewed research or official safety reviews. Supported, with caveats — the research points this way, but mostly from laboratory or animal studies, or at different strengths than ORY® uses. Limited evidence — little or no published research yet. We say so openly. |
1. General Description and Role
Claim: Glycerol monostearate-SE (INCI: glyceryl stearate SE) is the self-emulsifying grade of glyceryl stearate. It contains a small amount of potassium or sodium stearate, so it can build a cream on its own. In ORY® products, it creates rich, cushiony creams. |
Verification: Supported. The CIR Expert Panel concluded in its 2020 amended report that glyceryl stearate SE is safe in cosmetics in the present practices of use and concentration.

2. Composition and Production
Claim: Glyceryl stearate SE is glyceryl stearate processed with about 3–8% potassium or sodium stearate (a soap). It is anionic and works best near neutral pH. |
Verification: Supported. It breaks down with strong acids, high salt levels, and cationic ingredients such as BTMS, so ORY® does not combine them.

3. Skin Type Suitability
Claim: Glyceryl stearate SE suits all skin types in neutral-pH creams. |
Verification: Supported. CIR found it safe as used.

4. Hair and Scalp Suitability
Claim: In haircare, glyceryl stearate SE thickens non-conditioning hair creams and curl creams. |
Verification: Limited evidence. It is not compatible with cationic conditioners. ORY® haircare products are not intended to treat scalp conditions.
