Hydroxyethylcellulose

At ORY®, we believe you should know what’s in your products and why. This page lists the published research behind what we say about hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC). Each section starts with our claim, then tells you how well the research supports it, then lists the sources so you can read them yourself.

How to read this page

Supported — backed by peer-reviewed research or official safety reviews.

Supported, with caveats — the research points this way, but mostly from laboratory or animal studies, or at different strengths than ORY® uses.

Limited evidence — little or no published research yet. We say so openly.

1. General Description and Role

Claim: Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) is a water-soluble thickener made by modifying plant cellulose from wood pulp or cotton. In ORY® products, it forms clear, smooth, non-sticky gels and thickens conditioners.

Verification: Supported. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel found hydroxyethylcellulose safe as used in cosmetics.

      • What it shows: CIR safety assessment of cellulose ethers.
2. Composition and Production

Claim: HEC is made by treating purified cellulose with sodium hydroxide and ethylene oxide, which attaches hydroxyethyl groups and makes it dissolve in water. It carries no electrical charge (non-ionic), so it works with salts, acids, and cationic conditioners.

Verification: Supported. Its chemistry is well documented. Suppliers control residual ethylene oxide.

      • What it shows: Describes chemistry.
3. Skin Type Suitability

Claim: HEC suits all skin types.

Verification: Supported. It is a texture ingredient with no known sensitizing activity at use levels.

      • What it shows: Safety data.
4. Hair and Scalp Suitability

Claim: In haircare, HEC thickens gels, conditioners, and leave-ins, including those with cationic conditioners such as BTMS.

Verification: Supported. This is a formulation role; ORY® haircare products are not intended to treat scalp conditions.

      • What it shows: Reported uses.
5. Benefits

Claim: HEC gives products a clear, smooth, non-sticky texture and light hold.

Verification: Supported. These are texture benefits, not skin-treatment benefits. Cellulose thickeners can be broken down by microbes, so products must be well preserved.

6. Use Across ORY® Product Lines

Claim: HEC is used in ORY® Skincare, Haircare, and Cosmetics, and in liquid soap.

Verification: Supported. It is not needed in cold-process bars.

Product lineTypical levelHow ORY® uses it
Skincare0.3–2%Clear gels, gel-serums, aloe gels, masks, and after-shave gels.
Haircare0.5–2%Curl gels, styling gels, conditioners, leave-ins, and scalp serums.
Handmade Soap line0.5–1.5% in liquidLiquid soaps and syndet washes (not cold-process bars).

7. Pros

Claim: A clear, versatile, plant-derived thickener with a CIR safety conclusion.

Verification: Supported. Works with most other ingredients.

Citations:

    • Elder, R. L. (Ed.). (1986). Final report on the safety assessment of hydroxyethylcellulose, hydroxypropylcellulose, methylcellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and cellulose gum. Journal of the American College of Toxicology, 5(3), 1–59. https://doi.org/10.3109/10915818609141925
      • What it shows: Safety conclusion.
8. Cons

Claim: HEC does little to stabilize emulsions, can clump when mixed, and needs good preservation.

Verification: Supported. We list these limits so you have the full picture:

    • Poor emulsion stabilizer. Needs a partner in lotions.
    • Clumping. Must be pre-dispersed.
    • Preservation. Microbes can break it down.
    • No active benefit. Texture only.

      • What it shows: Preservation.
9. Safety Notes

Claim: Patch test before use; for external use only.

Verification: Supported. Follow these precautions:

    • Patch test any new product on a small area for 24–48 hours before full use.
    • Stop use if redness, burning, itching, or rash occurs, and talk to a healthcare provider.
    • For external use only. Avoid the eyes unless the product is made for the eye area.
    • If you are pregnant, nursing, have a medical condition, or are buying for a child, ask a healthcare provider before use.

10. Product-line notes
    • ORY® Skincare: For external use only. Not for deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns.
    • ORY® Haircare: Designed for the look and feel of hair and scalp comfort. Not intended to treat dandruff or scalp conditions, or to promote hair growth or prevent hair loss.
    • ORY® Handmade Soap line: This ingredient is not used in cold-process soap. Syndet, lotion, shampoo, and conditioner bars that contain it are cosmetics under FDA rules, not soap, and list all of their ingredients. Not intended to treat eczema or any skin condition.
    • ORY® Cosmetics: Do not share applicators, and replace any product that changes color, smell, or texture.
