◐ Handmade Soap (color fades to brown; mucilage/label)

☑ Cosmetics (natural pink tint) — dual-use botanical

Two hibiscus species serve ORY®, and the docs treat them together. Hibiscus sabdariffa (roselle) yields the deep-red calyx extract rich in anthocyanins, natural alpha-hydroxy acids (citric, malic, and the unique hibiscus acid), and mucilage — a gentle “botanical Botox” exfoliant and antioxidant whose phytochemistry and skin uses are reviewed in the pharmacological literature [1]. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (China rose) is the Ayurvedic hair botanical: its leaf and flower extracts promoted hair growth in vivo and in vitro in a controlled animal study [2], and its mucilage conditions and adds slip. Both are antioxidant, mildly astringent, and naturally pink — the color fades in cold-process soap but tints cosmetics beautifully.

What is Hibiscus Extract made of?

Hibiscus extracts are prepared by water/glycerin or hydro-alcoholic extraction of dried calyces (sabdariffa) or leaves/flowers (rosa-sinensis), or dried to powder. Constituents [1, 2]:

    • Anthocyanins (delphinidin, cyanidin sambubiosides — sabdariffa): Antioxidant; red-pink color (fades in light and alkali).
    • Organic acids (citric, malic, hibiscus acid, tartaric): Natural AHA-type exfoliation and brightening; low pH.
    • Mucilage polysaccharides (both species): Hydrating film; hair slip and conditioning.
    • Flavonoids (quercetin, gossypetin), phenolic acids: Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory.
    • Amino acids and vitamin C: Nourishing.
    • Use 1–5% extract; 1–2 tsp powder per lb in soap; pH 3.5–5.5 for AHA activity and color.

What skin type is best suited for Hibiscus Extract?

Hibiscus (sabdariffa) suits dull, uneven, and mature skin as a gentle natural exfoliant and antioxidant:

    • Mature: Natural AHAs and antioxidants smooth texture and even tone [1].
    • Combination: Brightening toners and masks.
    • Oily: Mild astringency and exfoliation.
    • Normal: Radiance masks.
    • Acne-prone: Gentle exfoliation and antioxidant support for marks.
    • Dry: Mucilage hydrates; use low AHA levels.
    • Sensitive: Gentle AHA; patch test; SPF by day.

What hair type is best suited for Hibiscus Extract?

Hibiscus (rosa-sinensis) is the Ayurvedic hair botanical:

    • Mature or thinning: Hair-growth promotion in a controlled animal study [2]; cosmetic claims.
    • Dry or damaged: Mucilage conditions and adds slip; amino acids nourish.
    • Curly and coily: Slip and definition in hibiscus gels and masks (flaxseed-like mucilage).
    • Dandruff-prone scalp: Traditional anti-dandruff; mild astringency.
    • Oily scalp: Balancing rinses.
    • Straight, wavy, color-treated: Shine rinses; pink tint can affect very light hair.
    • Sensitive scalp: Gentle; patch test.

What are the benefits of Hibiscus Extract?

Hibiscus’s benefits are supported by review and animal evidence [1, 2]:

    • Natural AHA exfoliation: Organic acids gently resurface and brighten [1].
    • Antioxidant: Anthocyanins and flavonoids [1].
    • Hydration and slip: Mucilage film on skin and hair.
    • Hair-growth support: In vivo and in vitro promotion (animal) [2].
    • Conditioning and definition: Mucilage for curls.
    • Anti-inflammatory and astringent: Flavonoids and tannins.
    • Natural pink color: Cosmetics tint.
