Behentrimonium chloride is a 22-carbon quaternary ammonium conditioner — the longest-chain “quat” in common use and the most intensely conditioning. Its positive charge binds it to the negatively charged, damaged regions of hair, where its long behenyl tail lays down a lubricating, hydrophobic film that dramatically cuts wet-comb friction, detangles, controls frizz, and adds softness and slip [1, 4]. It is the workhorse of deep-conditioning masks, intensive treatments for coily and chemically processed hair, and salon “smoothing” conditioners. Compared with its methosulfate cousin (BTMS), behentrimonium chloride is more substantive and more conditioning but slightly less mild, which is why regulators set concentration limits: the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel concluded trimoniums are safe within stated limits [2], and the EU permits behentrimonium chloride at up to 5% in rinse-off and 3% in leave-on hair products. Rapeseed-derived and readily biodegradable, it is a rinse-off-focused ingredient with narrow skin and cosmetics roles.

What is Behentrimonium Chloride made of?

Behentrimonium chloride is made by quaternizing behenyl (C22) dimethylamine from rapeseed oil with methyl chloride; supplied as a paste/flake in propylene glycol or isopropanol. Points to know [2]:

    • C22 quaternary ammonium chloride: Highest chain length among common quats — maximum substantivity and slip.
    • Cationic: Binds to anionic hair surfaces; incompatible with anionic surfactants and polymers (carbomer, xanthan at high levels).
    • Regulatory limits (EU Annex III): 5% rinse-off; 3% leave-on hair products; CIR: safe within limits [2].
    • Formulation: Melt with fatty alcohols (cetearyl/behenyl) at 70–75 °C; self-thickens; pH 3–6.
    • Typical use: 1–3% rinse-off conditioners; 3–5% deep masks; 0.5–1.5% leave-ins; 5–15% conditioner bars.
    • Rapeseed-derived; readily biodegradable; solvent carrier noted on labels.

What skin type is best suited for Behentrimonium Chloride?

Behentrimonium chloride is primarily a hair ingredient; skin uses are narrow and rinse-off or low-level:

    • Dry: Silky conditioning body lotions and cream cleansers at low levels.
    • Normal: Soft-feel cream cleansers.
    • Sensitive: Cationic quats can irritate at high levels; keep ≤0.5% on skin; patch test.
    • Oily, Acne-prone: Not indicated for the face.
    • Combination, Mature: Body-care only.

What hair type is best suited for Behentrimonium Chloride?

Behentrimonium chloride is the deep-conditioning quat for damaged and textured hair:

    • Curly and coily: The core use — maximum slip for detangling and definition; intensive masks.
    • Dry or damaged: Lubricating film cuts friction and breakage; smooths raised cuticles [1, 4].
    • Color-treated or chemically processed: Repairs feel after bleach, relaxers, and perms.
    • Straight and wavy: Low levels for smoothing and frizz control; higher levels weigh down.
    • Mature or thinning: Light use only; can flatten fine hair.
    • Oily scalp: Lengths and ends only; rinse-off.
    • Sensitive scalp, dandruff-prone: Rinse-off use on lengths; avoid scalp saturation.

What are the benefits of Behentrimonium Chloride?

Behentrimonium chloride’s benefits are documented in hair-science literature and safety review [1–4]:

    • Intense detangling: Largest reduction in wet-comb force among common quats [1, 4].
    • Frizz control and smoothing: Hydrophobic C22 film flattens the cuticle.
    • Softness and slip: Salon-mask sensory.
    • Reduced breakage: Lower friction during combing and styling.
    • Emulsification and thickening: Builds conditioner structure with fatty alcohols.
    • Heat and mechanical protection: Lubricating film.
    • Biodegradable, rapeseed-derived: Sustainable quat.
    • Conditioner-bar capability: Solid deep-conditioning bars.
