Calendula (Calendula officinalis, pot marigold) is one of the most trusted wound-healing and skin-soothing botanicals in European herbal medicine. Its orange petals are rich in triterpenoid esters (faradiol), flavonoids, carotenoids, and polysaccharides that reduce inflammation, stimulate granulation tissue, and support re-epithelialization [1, 3]. In a phase III randomized trial of 254 breast-cancer patients, calendula ointment significantly reduced radiation dermatitis compared with the standard trolamine cream [2], and a systematic review found consistent preclinical and clinical wound-healing benefit [4]. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel has concluded calendula ingredients are safe in cosmetics [5]. Available as an oil infusion, glycerin extract, or dried petals, calendula fits every ORY® line and is a signature ingredient for sensitive-skin and baby products.

What is Calendula Extract made of?

Calendula extract is prepared from dried flower heads by oil infusion (sunflower, olive, or jojoba), glycerin/water maceration, CO₂ extraction, or ethanol tincture. Key constituents [3]:

Oil infusions carry the lipophilic faradiol esters; glycerin/water extracts carry flavonoids and polysaccharides — ORY® uses both depending on product type.

    • Triterpenoid esters (faradiol monoesters): The principal anti-inflammatory compounds.
    • Triterpene alcohols and saponins (calendulosides): Anti-edema and wound-healing activity.
    • Flavonoids (quercetin, isorhamnetin, rutin): Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
    • Carotenoids (lutein, lycopene, beta-carotene): Give the orange color; antioxidant.
    • Polysaccharides: Immunomodulating and hydrating.
    • Essential oil (traces): Mild antimicrobial contribution.

What skin type is best suited for Calendula Extract?

Calendula is gentle enough for every ORY® skin type, with special value for compromised skin:

    • Sensitive: The core use — calms redness, itching, and reactivity; suitable for eczema-prone skin and babies.
    • Dry: Infused oils nourish and repair cracked, chapped skin.
    • Acne-prone: Anti-inflammatory and mildly antimicrobial; use the water/glycerin extract rather than heavy oils.
    • Mature: Antioxidant carotenoids and flavonoids; supports repair of thinning skin.
    • Combination: Water extract in serums; oil infusion for dry zones.
    • Normal: Daily soothing maintenance.
    • Oily: Glycerin extract in gels and toners.

What hair type is best suited for Calendula Extract?

Calendula soothes and conditions the scalp and adds shine and golden tone:

    • Sensitive scalp: Reduces irritation and itch.
    • Dry or damaged: Infused oil conditions scalp and fiber.
    • Dandruff-prone scalp: Anti-inflammatory and mildly antifungal support.
    • Color-treated or chemically processed: Calms post-service scalp; traditionally used to brighten blonde and golden tones in rinses.
    • Mature or thinning: Healthy scalp foundation.
    • Curly, coily, wavy, straight, oily scalp: Scalp-soothing addition to any formula.

What are the benefits of Calendula Extract?

Calendula’s benefits are supported by clinical and preclinical evidence [1–5]:

    • Wound healing: Increases granulation, collagen deposition, and closure rate in preclinical models [1, 4].
    • Radiation and irritant dermatitis: Reduced dermatitis severity in a phase III clinical trial [2].
    • Anti-inflammatory: Faradiol esters reduce edema and inflammatory mediators [3].
    • Antioxidant: Flavonoids and carotenoids protect against oxidative stress.
    • Antimicrobial support: Mild activity against bacteria and fungi.
    • Hydration and barrier support: Polysaccharides and lipids soothe dry, cracked skin.
    • Scalp soothing and color: Calms scalp; golden tint for blonde hair rinses.
    • Soap: Petals survive saponification and hold their color — a rare botanical that stays visible in bars.

Dual use across ORY® product lines

Calendula’s multiple forms make it one of ORY®‘s most naturally four-line botanicals; dried petals even keep their color in cold-process soap.
