Avocado oil is pressed from the flesh (not the seed) of Persea americana and is one of the richest, most penetrating carrier oils — high in oleic acid, with unusually large amounts of unsaponifiable matter (sterols, vitamins A, D, and E, squalene, and chlorophyll) that give it repair and anti-inflammatory value beyond its fatty acids. Avocado oil promoted collagen synthesis and wound healing in animal studies [1], and reviews list it among plant oils with barrier-repair and anti-inflammatory activity [2, 3]. Its deep green, buttery character suits very dry, mature, and sun-damaged skin, dry hair and scalps, and rich soap and cosmetic formulations.

What is Avocado Oil made of?

Avocado oil is cold-pressed from dried fruit pulp (unrefined, green) or refined (pale, odorless). Composition [1, 3]:

    • Oleic acid (60–70%): Deeply penetrating emollient.
    • Palmitic (12–20%), palmitoleic (3–9%), linoleic (10–15%) acids: Structural and barrier.
    • Unsaponifiables (2–6%): β-sitosterol, vitamins A, D, E, squalene, lecithin, chlorophyll: Repair, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant.
    • Comedogenic rating ~2–3; shelf life 12 months.
    • Soap data: SAP ~0.133 g NaOH/g; conditioning, creamy lather, adds mildness; 5–20% of oils.

What skin type is best suited for Allantoin?

Allantoin is one of the most universally tolerated actives in skincare and is suitable for all seven ORY® skin types:

    • Sensitive: The primary beneficiary. Calms redness, stinging, and irritation from harsh products, shaving, wind, or sun.
    • Dry: Supports moisture retention and softens rough, flaky skin; pairs well with urea and hyaluronic acid.
    • Acne-prone: Reduces post-breakout redness and supports healing without clogging pores; buffers the irritation of salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and retinol.
    • Mature: Encourages cell renewal and smoother texture; a supportive rather than corrective anti-aging ingredient.
    • Oily: Non-greasy and water-based; adds soothing benefits without adding oil.
    • Combination: Balances comfort across dry cheeks and an oily T-zone.
    • Normal: A maintenance ingredient that keeps healthy skin comfortable and resilient.

What are the benefits of Allantoin?

Allantoin is a small nitrogen-containing molecule (C₄H₆N₄O₃), chemically a diureide of glyoxylic acid. Its sources and production:

    • Soothing and anti-inflammatory: Reduces redness and irritation; a preclinical wound model showed allantoin regulates the inflammatory response during healing [1].
    • Wound healing and skin repair: Stimulates fibroblast proliferation and extracellular-matrix (collagen) synthesis, speeding re-epithelialization of minor wounds and abrasions [1, 3].
    • Moisturization: Improves water-binding capacity of the stratum corneum, helping dry skin feel softer and better hydrated.
    • Mild keratolytic action: Gently loosens dead surface cells, smoothing rough patches without the sting of acids.
    • Skin protectant: FDA-monograph skin protectant that shields chapped or cracked skin from further irritation.
    • Formulation buffer: Reduces the irritation potential of stronger actives (acids, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide) when combined in the same product.
    • Scalp comfort: Relieves itching and flaking in shampoos and conditioners.

Dual use across ORY® product lines

Allantoin is a true four-line ingredient for ORY®. It survives the high-pH environment of cold-process soap, tolerates the heat of hot-process and emulsion manufacturing, and is compatible with pigments and waxes used in cosmetics.

Pros and cons of Allantoin

Pros

Cons

    • Universally tolerated: Suitable for every ORY® skin and hair type, including reactive skin.
    • Regulatory clarity: FDA skin-protectant monograph ingredient with a CIR safety conclusion — strong support for label claims [2].
    • Formulation-friendly: Stable across pH 4–10, heat-tolerant, colorless and odorless.
    • Cost-effective: Delivers measurable comfort benefits at very low use levels.
    • Synergistic: Enhances tolerance of exfoliating and anti-aging actives.
    • Supportive, not transformative: Results on wrinkles, pigmentation, or acne are modest on its own; it works best alongside targeted actives.
    • Limited solubility: Roughly 0.5% dissolves in cool water; higher levels need warming or can recrystallize in clear products.
    • Mixed human evidence: Much of the wound-healing data is preclinical; one oral-wound study found no measurable effect at 0.5%.
    • Comfrey confusion: Customers may confuse allantoin with raw comfrey extract, which carries liver-toxicity concerns; ORY® uses purified allantoin only.

What is the best application of Allantoin?

Allantoin is a “build-in” ingredient that can be added to almost any ORY® product a customer selects:

    • Serums and moisturizers: Daily AM and PM use for ongoing soothing and hydration; particularly valuable in overnight repair creams.
    • Post-treatment care: Apply after exfoliating acids, retinol, shaving, waxing, or professional treatments to calm and support recovery.
    • After-sun products: Combine with aloe, panthenol, and bisabolol for sunburn relief.
    • Acne routines: Pair with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to reduce dryness and redness.
    • Acne routines: Pair with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to reduce dryness and redness.
    • Shampoos and scalp treatments: For itchy, dry, or flaking scalps; leave-in scalp serums give longer contact time.
    • Handmade soap: Adds a soothing claim to bars designed for sensitive or eczema-prone skin.
    • Cosmetics: Include in long-wear foundations, primers, and lip products to reduce end-of-day tightness.
