Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) is a succulent whose inner-leaf gel has been used for skin care since ancient Egypt. The clear gel is about 99% water carrying polysaccharides (notably acemannan), amino acids, enzymes, vitamins, and minerals that hydrate, soothe, and support repair [1, 2]. A controlled study using skin-bioengineering measurements found that cosmetic formulations with aloe extract increased skin hydration in a dose-dependent manner [3], and a systematic review found aloe shortened healing time of first- and second-degree burns [4]. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel considers aloe-derived ingredients safe in cosmetics provided anthraquinone (aloin) levels are kept low [5]. Aloe is water-based, mild, and stable enough to be used in every ORY® product line — including as the water replacement in cold-process soap.

What is Aloe Vera made of?

Aloe vera gel is filleted from the inner leaf, then filtered, decolorized (charcoal) to remove aloin, and either pasteurized as a juice or freeze-dried to a 100×/200× powder. Its constituents [1, 2]:

    • Water (~99%): The hydrating vehicle.
    • Polysaccharides (acemannan, glucomannans): Bind water, support wound healing and immune signaling.
    • Amino acids (20, including 7 essential): Contribute to the skin’s natural moisturizing factor.
    • Vitamins A, C, E, B12, folic acid, and choline; minerals (zinc, magnesium, calcium): Antioxidant and enzymatic support.
    • Enzymes (bradykinase, catalase): Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity.
    • Salicylic acid, sterols, and lignin: Mild anti-inflammatory and penetration-enhancing components.
    • Anthraquinones (aloin, emodin): Laxative latex compounds removed to <10 ppm in decolorized cosmetic aloe.

ORY® uses IASC-certified, decolorized inner-leaf aloe (juice or 200× powder reconstituted at 0.5% = 100% aloe equivalent).

What skin type is best suited for Aloe Vera?

Aloe vera is one of the safest botanicals for every ORY® skin types:

    • Sensitive: Calms redness, sunburn, and reactivity; a classic after-sun and post-procedure ingredient.
    • Dry: Increases hydration measurably [3]; layer under oils or creams to seal.
    • Oily: Oil-free, weightless hydration; mild astringent feel.
    • Acne-prone: Soothes inflamed lesions; non-comedogenic; supports healing of post-acne marks.
    • Combination: Hydrates all zones without heaviness.
    • Mature: Polysaccharides support hydration and elasticity; antioxidant vitamins.
    • Normal: Daily hydration and soothing base.

What hair type is best suited for Aloe Vera?

Aloe is a staple in haircare as a hydrating, scalp-soothing base:

    • Sensitive scalp: Reduces itch and irritation from surfactants and environment.
    • Dry or damaged: Water-based hydration for the scalp and fiber; excellent leave-in base.
    • Curly and coily: Adds slip and moisture; a common base for curl gels and detanglers.
    • Dandruff-prone scalp: Soothes flaking scalps; enzymes gently loosen dead cells.
    • Oily scalp: Lightweight, non-greasy scalp hydration.
    • Color-treated or chemically processed: Calms post-service scalp irritation.
    • Mature or thinning: Healthy-scalp foundation for growth-support actives.
    • Straight and wavy: Light hydration and shine without weight.

What are the benefits of Aloe Vera?

Aloe vera’s benefits are well documented [1–5]:

    • Hydration: Dose-dependent increase in skin water content [3]; polysaccharides bind water on the surface.
    • Soothing and anti-inflammatory: Reduces sunburn pain and redness; bradykinase and sterols reduce inflammation [1].
    • Wound and burn healing: Systematic review found faster healing of burns versus controls [4].
    • Antioxidant: Vitamins C and E and enzymes neutralize free radicals.
    • Antimicrobial support: Mild activity against bacteria and fungi [2].
    • Skin barrier support: Amino acids and polysaccharides support NMF and barrier function.
    • Scalp and hair conditioning: Hydrates scalp, adds slip, and calms irritation.
    • Soap mildness: Replacing water with aloe juice adds a gentler, creamier feel and polysaccharide skin-conditioning claims.

Pros and cons of Aloe Vera

Pros

Cons

    • Extremely well tolerated: Safe for all skin and hair types, children, and pregnancy at cosmetic levels.
    • Multifunctional: Hydrating, soothing, healing, antioxidant.
    • Consumer recognition: One of the most recognized natural ingredients.
    • Four-line utility: Including water replacement in soap.
    • Quality variation: Diluted or adulterated aloe is common; ORY® specifies IASC-certified material with verified polysaccharide content.
    • Preservation: Sugars and water make aloe highly susceptible to microbial growth.
    • Aloin content: Non-decolorized whole-leaf aloe can irritate and discolor; use inner-leaf decolorized grades.
    • Modest standalone anti-aging: Supportive rather than corrective for wrinkles or pigmentation.
    • Rare allergy: Documented but uncommon; patch test.

What is the best application of Aloe Vera?

Aloe vera works as a base and a soother across routines:

    • After-sun gel: Apply liberally to sunburned or heat-stressed skin; store chilled.
