Aloe leaf extract is the concentrated form of aloe: rather than the 99%-water gel, it is prepared by extracting the inner leaf with water, glycerin, or alcohol and concentrating the polysaccharides, aloesin, amino acids, and enzymes into a small-volume ingredient that can be dosed precisely into any formula. It provides the same evidence-based benefits as aloe vera gel — measurable hydration [3], soothing of inflammation, and support for wound repair [1, 4] — at low use levels that leave room in a formula for other actives. It also delivers aloesin, a chromone shown to inhibit tyrosinase and reduce UV-induced pigmentation [2], giving aloe extract a brightening dimension that plain gel lacks. Like aloe juice, it is safe across every ORY® line [5].

What is Aloe Leaf Extract made of?

Aloe leaf extract is made by macerating decolorized inner-leaf aloe in a solvent (water, glycerin, propanediol, or ethanol), filtering, and concentrating. Its key constituents:

    • Polysaccharides (acemannan): Water-binding, wound-healing, and immune-modulating [1].
    • Aloesin and related chromones: Tyrosinase-inhibiting, UV-protective phenolics that give the extract mild brightening activity [2].
    • Amino acids and NMF components: Hydration and barrier support.
    • Enzymes (bradykinase), sterols, salicylates: Anti-inflammatory activity.
    • Vitamins and minerals: Antioxidant cofactors.
    • Carrier: Glycerin-based extracts add humectancy; alcohol-based extracts are more concentrated but drying.

The key label distinction: “Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract” (concentrate) versus “Leaf Juice” (whole gel) — both should be decolorized, inner-leaf, low-aloin material.

What skin type is best suited for for Aloe Leaf Extract?

Aloe leaf extract suits all seven ORY® skin types and is the preferred aloe form when a formula must carry several actives:

    • Sensitive: Concentrated soothing at 1–3% without diluting the formula.
    • Combination: Hydration plus mild aloesin brightening for uneven tone.
    • Acne-prone: Soothes lesions and helps fade post-inflammatory marks (aloesin) [2].
    • Dry: Glycerin-based extract adds humectant hydration [3].
    • Mature: Antioxidant, hydration, and tone-evening support.
    • Oily: Weightless in gel serums.
    • Normal: Daily calming and hydration.

What hair type is best suited for for Aloe Leaf Extract?

The concentrated extract lets ORY® add aloe’s scalp benefits to shampoos and treatments at low percentages:

    • Sensitive scalp: Calms itch and irritation.
    • Dandruff-prone scalp: Soothing and mild enzymatic support alongside salicylic acid or tea tree.
    • Dry or damaged: Humectant hydration for scalp and fiber.
    • Curly and coily: Moisture and slip in leave-ins.
    • Oily scalp: Lightweight hydration.
    • Color-treated, mature or thinning, straight, wavy: Universal scalp-comfort ingredient.

What are the benefits of Aloe Leaf Extract?

Aloe leaf extract concentrates the benefits of aloe [1–5]:

    • Hydration: Dose-dependent moisturizing effect confirmed by bioengineering measurements [3].
    • Soothing: Reduces redness, sunburn discomfort, and irritation.
    • Brightening (aloesin): Inhibits tyrosinase and reduces UV-induced hyperpigmentation in human studies [2].
    • Wound-healing support: Acemannan promotes fibroblast activity and healing [1, 4].
    • Antioxidant: Phenolics, vitamins, and enzymes counter oxidative stress.
    • Antimicrobial support: Mild activity against skin bacteria and fungi.
    • Formulation efficiency: Delivers aloe benefits at 0.5–5% instead of 20–100%.

Pros and cons of Aloe Leaf Extract

Pros

Cons

    • Concentrated: Precise dosing; leaves room for other actives.
    • Brightening bonus: Aloesin adds tone-evening activity [2].
    • Gentle and universally tolerated: All skin and hair types.
    • Stable: Glycerin extracts are more shelf-stable than fresh juice.
    • Four-line utility: Fits every ORY® product type.
    • Standardization: Extract strength varies by supplier; specify polysaccharide/aloesin content.
    • Alcohol carriers: Ethanol extracts can dry sensitive skin; ORY® prefers glycerin or propanediol carriers.
    • Preservation: Water/glycerin extracts require preservation.
    • Rare allergy: Patch test.
    • Less “fresh” positioning: Customers sometimes prefer the whole-gel story; both can be used together.

What is the best application of Aloe Leaf Extract?

Aloe leaf extract is a supporting soother and brightener in leave-on and rinse-off products:

    • Brightening serum: Combine with niacinamide and licorice for tone-evening.
    • Calming serum or cream: With allantoin, bisabolol, and Centella.
    • After-sun lotion: Concentrated soothing in a moisturizing base.
    • Toner or mist: Daily hydration.
    • Shampoo and scalp serum: For sensitive, dry, or flaky scalps.
    • Soap: Soothing claim in sensitive-skin bars.
    • Cosmetics: Hydrating, calming base makeup.
