Procyanidin B2 is an oligomeric proanthocyanidin — a dimer of epicatechin — concentrated in unripe apples, and it is one of the few botanical compounds with a coherent human evidence trail for hair growth. Japanese researchers first showed that apple procyanidins stimulated hair-epithelial-cell growth and induced anagen in mice, with B2 the most active fraction [1]; a first clinical trial of a 1% topical procyanidin B2 tonic increased hair counts versus placebo [2]; a follow-up double-blind study confirmed increased total and terminal hairs after six months [3]; and a 12-month extension showed continued benefit [4]. Its mechanism involves protein kinase C isozyme regulation in hair cells and suppression of TGF-β signaling, and it is a strong antioxidant in its own right. Light- and oxidation-sensitive, it is formulated in protected scalp tonics and night antioxidant products, not in soap.

What is Procyanidin B2 made of?

Procyanidin B2 is extracted from unripe apple (or grape seed / cocoa) and purified by chromatography, or used as a standardized apple-procyanidin extract. Points to know [1, 3]:

    • Epicatechin dimer (B-type linkage): Flavan-3-ol oligomer; potent antioxidant.
    • Hair mechanism: Selective PKC modulation in hair epithelial cells; TGF-β suppression; anagen induction [1].
    • Physical form: Off-white to reddish powder; water/ethanol-soluble; oxidizes and browns in light and air.
    • Stability: pH 3–6; antioxidant partners (vitamin E, ascorbyl derivatives); opaque airless packaging; cool-down addition.
    • Typical use: 0.7–1% scalp tonics (trial levels); 0.1–0.5% skincare.

What skin type is best suited for Procyanidin B2?

Procyanidin B2 is an antioxidant for all seven ORY® skin types, secondary to its scalp role:

    • Mature: Proanthocyanidin antioxidant; collagen protection.
    • Normal: Night antioxidant defense.
    • Combination: Light antioxidant serums.
    • Sensitive: Anti-inflammatory; patch test.
    • Oily: Water/ethanol-based serums.
    • Acne-prone: Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory support.
    • Dry: In night creams with emollients.

What hair type is best suited for Procyanidin B2?

Procyanidin B2 is ORY®‘s clinically evidenced apple-derived scalp active:

    • Mature or thinning: The core use — increased hair counts in a placebo-controlled trial [2], confirmed double-blind at 6 months [3], sustained at 12 months [4]; cosmetic “fuller-looking hair” claims.
    • Straight, wavy, curly, coily: Leave-on tonic for all textures.
    • Sensitive scalp: Well tolerated in trials.
    • Oily scalp: Ethanol/glycol tonic base suits.
    • Dandruff-prone, dry or damaged, color-treated: Scalp-focused; neutral for the fiber.

What are the benefits of Procyanidin B2?

Procyanidin B2’s benefits are supported by laboratory and clinical studies [1–4]:

    • Hair growth support: Increased hair counts in placebo-controlled and double-blind human trials [2, 3]; sustained at 12 months [4].
    • Anagen induction: Hair-cell proliferation and anagen in mice [1].
    • Antioxidant: Potent proanthocyanidin radical scavenging.
    • Anti-inflammatory: Reduces inflammatory signaling.
    • Collagen protection: Antioxidant defense of dermal matrix.
    • Non-hormonal: Complementary to saw palmetto; suitable for women.
    • Natural source: Apple-derived.

Dual use across ORY® product lines

Procyanidin B2 is a leave-on active for haircare and skincare, with limited cosmetics use; soap destroys it.

What is the best application of Procyanidin B2?
