Adenosine is a nucleoside the body makes constantly — the “A” of ATP and of DNA — that acts as a signaling molecule on cell-surface adenosine receptors. In skin and scalp those receptors regulate fibroblast activity, growth-factor production, and blood flow, which is why topical adenosine has evidence in two ORY® categories. For skin, adenosine-containing products reduced wrinkle depth and roughness in a controlled study using optical profilometry [1], and adenosine is an approved “functional” anti-wrinkle ingredient in Korea at 0.04%. For hair, topical adenosine increased the proportion of thick hairs and anagen (growing) hairs in placebo-controlled trials in Japanese women with female pattern hair loss [2] and in Japanese and Caucasian men with androgenetic alopecia [3, 4] — through up-regulation of follicle growth factors (FGF-7, VEGF) rather than hormone blockade, making it complementary to saw palmetto and rosemary. Water-soluble, stable, colorless, and non-irritating, adenosine is a quiet but well-evidenced active for serums, creams, scalp tonics, and anti-aging cosmetics.

What is Adenosine made of?

Adenosine is produced by microbial fermentation and purified to a white crystalline powder. Points to know [1, 3]:

    • Purine nucleoside (adenine + D-ribose): Identical to the body’s own signaling molecule; acts on A1/A2 adenosine receptors.
    • Skin mechanism: Stimulates fibroblast proliferation and collagen/elastin-related activity; improves microcirculation; anti-inflammatory [1].
    • Hair mechanism: Increases FGF-7 and VEGF expression in dermal papilla cells, prolonging anagen and thickening fibers [2–4].
    • Physical form: Water-soluble (~5 g/L at room temperature, higher warm); stable across pH 4–8 and moderate heat; light-stable.
    • Typical use: 0.04–0.1% skincare (Korean functional level 0.04%); 0.5–0.75% scalp (trial levels); 0.04–0.1% cosmetics.

What skin type is best suited for Adenosine?

Adenosine suits all seven ORY® skin types as a gentle anti-wrinkle active:

    • Mature: Reduced wrinkle depth and roughness in controlled testing [1]; the primary use.
    • Normal: Preventive smoothing from the late 20s onward.
    • Combination: Water-based, weightless.
    • Sensitive: Non-irritating; anti-inflammatory; suits reactive skin.
    • Dry: In hydrating serums and creams.
    • Oily: Oil-free serums and gels.
    • Acne-prone: Non-comedogenic; supports healing of marks.

What hair type is best suited for Adenosine?

Adenosine is one of the few cosmetic scalp actives with placebo-controlled human trials:

    • Mature or thinning: The core use — increased thick-hair and anagen ratios in women [2] and men [3, 4] with pattern hair loss; cosmetic “fuller-looking hair” claims.
    • Straight, wavy, curly, coily: Scalp tonic for all textures; no fiber effect.
    • Sensitive scalp: Non-irritating; a gentle alternative to stimulating essential oils.
    • Oily scalp: Water-based, non-greasy tonic.
    • Dandruff-prone scalp: Neutral; combine with piroctone olamine.
    • Dry or damaged, color-treated: Scalp-focused; color-safe.

What are the benefits of Adenosine?

Adenosine’s benefits are supported by controlled human studies [1–4]:

    • Wrinkle reduction: Decreased wrinkle depth and roughness [1].
    • Skin smoothing: Improved surface texture and elasticity feel.
    • Hair thickening: Higher proportion of thick and anagen hairs in placebo-controlled trials [2–4].
    • Growth-factor support: FGF-7 and VEGF up-regulation at the follicle [2].
    • Anti-inflammatory: Adenosine-receptor signaling calms irritation.
    • Microcirculation: Supports blood flow in skin and scalp.
    • Non-hormonal: Complementary to saw palmetto and rosemary; suitable for women.
    • Stable and gentle: Colorless, odorless, non-sensitizing.
