Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein

ORY® product lines:

◐ Skincare (low-MW leave-ons only; NOT facial cleansers)

☑ Haircare (volume, moisture, repair — rinse-off and leave-on)

☒ Handmade Soap (excluded — the product category behind the sensitization cases)

◐ Cosmetics (low-MW, non-cleansing products; labeled) — haircare-led protein with strict allergen controls

Hydrolyzed wheat protein is the classic film-forming, moisture-binding hair protein — glutamine-rich peptides that penetrate the cortex to add volume, elasticity, and shine and that give skin a smoothing, hydrating film [1]. It is effective and inexpensive, but it carries the most serious documented safety history of any cosmetic protein: a Japanese facial soap containing a high-molecular-weight, acid-hydrolyzed wheat protein sensitized thousands of users through the skin and nose, causing new-onset wheat allergy and wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis [2, 3], and hydrolyzed wheat proteins in cosmetics have caused immediate hypersensitivity reactions more broadly [4]. The lesson is molecular weight and product type: high-MW hydrolysates in facial cleansers and soap, used repeatedly on inflamed skin, are the risk. ORY® therefore uses only certified low-MW (typically <3,500 Da) hydrolyzed wheat protein, primarily in haircare, never in soap or facial cleansers, always declared as a wheat-derived ingredient — and offers oat and rice proteins as the safer alternatives for sensitive customers.

What is Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein made of?

Hydrolyzed wheat protein is produced by enzymatic (preferred) or acid hydrolysis of wheat gluten, filtered and standardized by molecular weight. Points to know [1–4]:

    • Glutamine-rich peptides: High moisture-binding; strong film formation; hair-cortex penetration at low MW.
    • Molecular weight is the safety variable: The sensitizing soap ingredient was high-MW (~50,000 Da) acid-hydrolyzed wheat protein; low-MW enzymatic grades (<3,500 Da) carry far lower risk [3].
    • Contains gluten-derived peptides: Not gluten-free; declare wheat.
    • Physical form: Amber aqueous solution (20–30% solids); water-soluble; pH 4–7; add at cool-down.
    • Typical use: 0.5–3% haircare; ≤1% low-MW leave-on skincare; not in cleansers or soap.

What skin type is best suited for Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein?

Hydrolyzed wheat protein’s skincare use is restricted to low-MW leave-ons; ORY® prefers oat or rice protein for skin:

    • Dry: Low-MW film-forming hydration in leave-on lotions (≤1%).
    • Mature: Tightening, smoothing film in leave-on serums (≤1%).
    • Normal: Leave-on only; not cleansers.
    • Combination and Oily: Prefer oat/rice protein.
    • Sensitive and Acne-prone: Avoid — sensitization risk on inflamed skin [2–4]; use oat or rice protein.

What hair type is best suited for Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein?

Hydrolyzed wheat protein is a strong volumizing and repairing hair protein when low-MW grades are used:

    • Dry or damaged: Penetrates the cortex; moisture, elasticity, and reduced breakage [1].
    • Straight and wavy: Volume and body for fine, limp hair.
    • Color-treated or chemically processed: Repair and shine.
    • Curly and coily: Elasticity; balance with moisture.
    • Mature or thinning: Body for fine hair.
    • Oily scalp: Rinse-off use.
    • Sensitive scalp, dandruff-prone: Avoid on inflamed scalps; choose oat/rice protein.

What are the benefits of Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein?

Hydrolyzed wheat protein’s benefits are documented in protein-cosmetics literature, with safety governed by molecular weight [1–4]:

    • Moisture binding: Glutamine-rich peptides hold water in the fiber [1].
    • Volume and body: Film-forming lift for fine hair.
    • Elasticity and reduced breakage: Cortex penetration at low MW.
    • Shine: Smooth cuticle film.
    • Skin film-forming (leave-on, low-MW): Smoothing, hydrating film [1].
    • Cost-effective: Inexpensive protein.

Dual use across ORY® product lines

Hydrolyzed wheat protein is haircare-led; it is excluded from soap and facial cleansers and limited in skincare and cosmetics.

Pros and cons of Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein

Pros

Cons

    • Strong volume and moisture: Fine and dry hair [1].
    • Cortex penetration (low MW): Elasticity.
    • Inexpensive: Cost-effective.
    • Well-known: Consumer recognition.
    • Sensitization history: Wheat-allergy epidemic from high-MW protein in facial soap [2, 3]; immediate hypersensitivity reports [4].

    • Grade-dependent safety: Certified low-MW only.
    • Better alternatives exist: Oat and rice proteins for sensitive skin.

What is the best application of Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein?

Hydrolyzed wheat protein is used in haircare with low-MW grades:

    • Volumizing conditioner: 1–2% low-MW.
    • Repair mask: 2–3% alternated with moisture.
    • Leave-in: 1%.
    • Shampoo: 0.5–1%.
    • Leave-on body lotion: ≤1% low-MW (wheat declared).
    • Not in: Soap, facial cleansers, or products for wheat-allergic or highly atopic customers.

Results vary by skin and scalp type, formulation, and use. Hydrolyzed wheat protein can cause immediate allergic reactions (hives or swelling), especially in people with wheat allergy or sensitive, inflamed skin. Always patch test, follow label directions, and stop use if irritation occurs.
