Piroctone olamine is a hydroxypyridone antifungal — the ethanolamine salt of piroctone, developed as a gentler successor to zinc pyrithione. It works by chelating iron and other metal ions inside fungal cells, disrupting the energy metabolism of Malassezia yeasts, whose overgrowth on sebum-rich skin drives dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis [3]. Controlled trials show it performs at least as well as zinc pyrithione: a piroctone olamine/salicylic acid shampoo matched a zinc pyrithione shampoo for dandruff reduction [1], and a piroctone olamine/climbazole shampoo outperformed zinc pyrithione in moderate-to-severe dandruff [2]. A pilot study also found that an antimicrobial lotion containing piroctone olamine reduced scalp inflammation and improved hair shedding in androgenetic alopecia [4], supporting the link between a healthy microbial scalp environment and hair retention. Piroctone olamine is mild, low-odor, water-dispersible, and, unlike zinc pyrithione, stable in a wide range of surfactant and leave-on systems. In the United States, products that claim to “treat” or “control dandruff” are OTC drugs under the FDA dandruff/seborrheic dermatitis monograph, whose approved actives are pyrithione zinc, selenium sulfide, salicylic acid, sulfur, coal tar, and ketoconazole. Neither climbazole nor piroctone olamine is on that list, so in the U.S. ORY® uses them as cosmetic scalp-care ingredients with cosmetic claims (“helps reduce visible flakes,” “supports a balanced scalp”), never as dandruff-treatment drug claims. In the EU and Asia they are established cosmetic anti-dandruff agents.

What is Piroctone Olamine made of?

Piroctone olamine is synthesized as the ethanolamine salt of piroctone (a hydroxypyridone) and supplied as a white to off-white powder. Points to know [1, 3]:

    • Hydroxypyridone antifungal: Chelates Fe³⁺ and other cations; inhibits fungal mitochondrial energy production; broad activity against Malassezia, dermatophytes, and Gram-positive bacteria.
    • Ethanolamine salt: Improves water dispersibility; soluble in surfactants, ethanol, and glycols; slightly water-soluble.
    • Stable pH 5–8; heat-tolerant; compatible with anionic and amphoteric surfactants and with most cationic conditioners (unlike zinc pyrithione, which needs suspension).
    • Also a mild preservative booster: Contributes antifungal preservation in formulas.
    • Typical use: 0.5–1% rinse-off (EU max 1% rinse-off, 0.5% leave-on); 0.1–0.5% leave-on.

What skin type is best suited for Piroctone Olamine?

Piroctone olamine suits oily, seborrheic-prone, and Malassezia-prone skin:

    • Oily: Controls the yeast that thrives on sebum; used in facial and body cleansers.
    • Acne-prone: Helpful for “fungal acne” (Malassezia folliculitis) on the forehead, chest, and back; complements salicylic acid.
    • Combination: Flaky, oily areas (nose, brows, hairline) — seborrheic-prone zones.
    • Sensitive: Milder than zinc pyrithione; low irritation; patch test.
    • Normal: Occasional purifying cleanser.
    • Dry: Not a primary choice unless seborrheic flaking is present; pair with emollients.
    • Mature: Seborrheic-prone areas only.

What hair type is best suited for Piroctone Olamine?

Piroctone olamine is ORY®‘s hero cosmetic anti-flake scalp active:

    • Dandruff-prone scalp: The core use — equal or superior to zinc pyrithione in controlled trials [1, 2]; reduces visible flakes and itch.
    • Oily scalp: Targets sebum-loving Malassezia; balances the scalp.
    • Mature or thinning: Reduced scalp inflammation and improved shedding in an androgenetic-alopecia pilot [4]; supports a healthy follicle environment (cosmetic claims).
    • Sensitive scalp: Milder than zinc pyrithione; low odor; leave-on tolerated.
    • Curly and coily: Leave-on scalp tonics suit low-wash-frequency routines.
    • Color-treated: Does not strip color (unlike some monograph actives).
    • Straight, wavy, dry or damaged: Scalp-focused; conditioner-compatible.

What are the benefits of Piroctone Olamine?

Piroctone olamine’s benefits are supported by controlled trials and reviews [1–4]:

    • Anti-flake efficacy: Matched or exceeded zinc pyrithione for dandruff [1, 2].
    • Antifungal: Broad activity against Malassezia and other fungi via metal chelation [3].
    • Anti-itch and anti-inflammatory: Reduces scalp itch and redness [2, 4].
    • Sebum balance: Controls yeast-driven scalp oiliness.
    • Hair-retention support: Improved shedding in an inflammatory-alopecia pilot [4].
    • Leave-on capability: Stable in tonics and serums for continuous scalp care.
    • Conditioner-compatible: Works in cationic conditioners and 2-in-1s.
    • Preservation support: Antifungal contribution to formula preservation.

Dual use across ORY® product lines
